In case you didn't catch it on C-Span or just about every news organization besides Fox Noise yesterday, Senate Republicans hauled former Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith before the Judiciary Committee to castigate him for having the temerity to investigate Donald Berzelius Trump for his role in his January 6, 2021 attempted overthrow of the United States government.
Senator Eric Schmitt thought he had Smith in a perjury trap. Flashing a poster board of some on-line messages so quickly nobody could read them, Schmidt pressed Smith to repeat his testimony that he had not gone to Georgia in February, 2024, presumably to coordinate witness testimony there. Schmitt had his "Gotcha! moment" all set up: the text messages proved that Smith was at a Atlanta Hawks basketball game on February 3, 2024.
Schmitt concluded his presentation in highest dudgeon, scolding Smith, "You will go down as a total dirtbag!"
It turns out that Smith was at an Iowa Hawkeyes game in Baltimore that day.
Senator Amy Klobuchar helped clear that up, and suggested that Schmitt owed Smith an apology for calling him a dirtbag on the basis of a mistaken text message.
Instead, Schmitt fumed, "I stand by my statement."
